First of all, Chris Jordan made an engaging speech, further enhanced by his pictures.
The first image was of the factory pollution thing - creative and much effort was put in. To portray that a lot of plastic cups were being used, what better way than to use the cups themselves? The large number of cups used alarms us, and it is what keeps us interested. Daily issues that we take for granted may cause us harm in the future. Chris Jordan reminds us with relevant statistics, and in this case he compares the heights of all the cups with an average human based on duration. The height is more than what we can comprehend. With this projection, it is more mind-provoking and easier to remember.
His speech relates to our lives (more so to Americans though), his pictures expresses our daily issues, with regards to population and usage and wastage
In Alex Steffen’s speech, he goes into the greener world. He shows us the unique ways to save energy and use fewer resources in this very urban world. Invention of products for, if possible, every country to use in order to save the planet a little – a good example would be
I got kind of bored, possibly lost too, in the speech. A lot of words used, plain pictures and stuffs.
He does comparisons with poorer people to urban people – something we can relate to.
Other than living our lives, he feels that we should make things better as well. ‘The tools we use to change the world ought to be beautiful in themselves.’
Through these videos, I can see that products have to be invented for a purpose. After fulfilling that purpose, they have to be recycled so that the Earth’s resources don’t just get wasted and buried or burned away. In order to create a better product, we should be aware of the current issues that the globe is facing and find a solution to rectify the problems.
